ICE Detainer Follow-Up

ICE ODLS is a narrow follow-up tool for immigration custody, not a general Lawrence County release list. Use it when the jail, court, or another agency says a person was released from county custody to ICE or transferred on an immigration hold. The county release and the ICE custody status are separate events, and each must be verified through the agency that controls that record.

Where ICE Transfers Go

Research did not find public evidence that Lawrence County operates a local ICE detention contract. The correct use of ICE ODLS is conditional: if the jail says a person was released to ICE or transferred on an immigration detainer, then ODLS may help locate current ICE custody.

A person can be released from Lawrence County jail custody and still not be released into the community if ICE assumes custody. The county jail release record should identify the transfer or receiving agency, while ICE ODLS addresses the later immigration-custody question.

How to Confirm ICE Custody

ICE ODLS says it locates people currently in ICE custody or in CBP custody for more than 48 hours. USA.gov describes two search routes: A-number and country of birth, or name, country of birth, and birth date.

  1. First confirm with the Lawrence County Detention Center or court whether the county release was actually to ICE or another immigration authority.
  2. Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator System only if the transfer is documented or strongly indicated.
  3. Search by A-number and country of birth when available. Otherwise use the biographical search fields described by USA.gov.
  4. If ODLS does not return a match, do not treat that as proof of no county release. The county jail record and ICE custody record answer different questions.
  5. For ordinary bond, time served, court order, ADOC transfer, or community corrections placement, use the relevant county, court, ADOC, or supervision record instead.

ICE ODLS Contact Path

ODLS is an online federal locator rather than a local Lawrence County office. Use it after a release or transfer source points to immigration custody, and keep the county jail record request separate from the federal immigration lookup.

About ICE Detainer Checks

An immigration detainer or transfer can make a county jail release look confusing. The county record may say the person left the Lawrence County Detention Center, while ICE may show current custody later. That is not a contradiction; it means two custodians are involved.

Ask the jail for the release date, release reason, receiving agency, and any transfer destination it can provide. Then use ODLS to check the immigration-custody side if the receiving agency was ICE or another immigration authority.

Do not treat a detainer note as the same thing as an ICE custody record unless the transfer actually occurred. A county jail can have a hold or notification issue while the court case, bond status, or local sentence still controls the immediate release question. The safest sequence is to confirm the Lawrence County release entry first, then check whether the receiving agency field points to ICE. If it does, ODLS and immigration resources become follow-up tools for current federal custody.

ODLS Search Requirements

The USA.gov ICE guidance is useful because it states the identifying information needed for ODLS searches. Match those requirements before assuming the locator can find a person by name alone.

County Release vs ICE Custody

The Lawrence County jail is a county detention facility for people awaiting trial, local sentence outcomes, and transfer. If a person leaves that jail because ICE assumes custody, the county release record closes one custody event and the ICE locator may open another. Confirm both before describing where the person went.

ODLS should not be used as a broad Lawrence County release search. It is a federal immigration-custody locator. The research did not find evidence that Lawrence County operates a local ICE detention contract, so the proper wording is conditional: use ICE only when the jail, court, or another official source says immigration custody is involved. Otherwise, start with the sheriff, court records, ADOC, ABPP, or community corrections depending on the release path.

If ICE is involved, search details matter. USA.gov describes ODLS searches by A-number and country of birth, or by name, country of birth, and birth date. A misspelled name, missing country of birth, or custody outside ODLS coverage can block a match. That does not change the Lawrence County jail release record. It only means the immigration side needs a better identifier or a different federal follow-up route.

For a local release record request, ask the jail for the release reason, the receiving agency, and any transfer date that can be released. That wording keeps the request focused on the county record while leaving immigration-status questions to the federal system. If the receiving agency is not ICE, ODLS is usually the wrong next step.
